The Canadian bookkeeping industry (including payroll services) generated 1.2 billion in fees during 2006 (the most recent year for which figures are available from Statistics Canada). And in recent years, accounting and bookkeeping fees charged have been growing by 12 to 15% per year.

According to Statistics Canada, as of June 2008, there were 2.4 million businesses in Canada, 2.1 million of which (almost 90%) had less than 10 employees. In addition, about 1.6 million of these (over 75%) of these are service businesses. So, almost 70% of all businesses in Canada are service-based businesses with less than 10 employees - ideally suited for off-site bookkeepers. Clearly, there is a lot of work to go around.

In addition, the number of accountants and bookkeepers available to do this work is set to decline in the foreseeable future. According to a June 2007 article in Canadian Economic Observer, "Canada's labour shortages over the last few years may be only a foretaste of a longer-term trend as the boomer generation rapidly approaches traditional retirement age.
